For many years, travelers arriving in the archipelago have come face to face with a small yellow airplane that sits proudly on the ceiling of the terminal at Saint-Pierre Pointe-Blanche Airport. How did this airplane get there? Who built it?

It all begins in the 1930s in France. In 1934, the Pou-du-Ciel [Flying Flea] is exhibited at the Aeronautical Show at the Grand Palais in Paris for the very first time. It attracts a lot of visitors, especially because it is the only aircraft you can build yourself at home. The wings fold and it can roll like a car on the road. Revolutionary, isn't it?

Its inventor is Henri Mignet, he took a month to build the HM14, the definitive version of the Pou-du-Ciel. In the months following its exhibition, the little aircraft is in great demand, many aviation enthusiasts get one.

Henri Mignet's airplane is so popular that it is sung about by a popular singer of the 30s, known as La Houppa. In 1936, the government bans flights of the aircraft following numerous accidents. Further tests are demanded and the aircraft is modified before it can fly again.

1939, World War II breaks out. It stops the success of the Pou-du-Ciel, which had nevertheless sold about a hundred examples in Great Britain.

In the archipelago? It would take until 1948 for the first and only Pou-du-Ciel of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon to be built.

And it is Mr. Émile Poirier, later a pioneer of the inter-island link, who makes do with what he has and buys an airplane in Halifax to recover its engine and put it in his Pou-du-Ciel. For the wings and the rear fuselage, the future pilot had more than one trick up his sleeve:

"I found in Halifax an old airplane that had an engine that would suit me. So I bought that airplane to get the engine. I found a friend who was a carpenter at the hospital in Saint-Pierre. And downstairs, that corresponded to his workshop at the hospital. I got permission from the head doctor to work after hours, he worked after hours with me. He made the wings in the basement of the hospital. The fuselage in my back kitchen."

In 1999, Michel Lorca and Jean-Claude Girardin restored Mr. Poirier's Pou-du-Ciel. The aircraft, which never actually flew for lack of authorization, found its place in the Saint-Pierre terminal, shortly before the visit of Jacques Chirac for the inauguration of a new terminal.

If Émile Poirier's Pou-du-Ciel never flew, it is unthinkable today to see it disappear from the Saint-Pierre terminal, it is entirely part of the heritage of the archipelago.

Depuis de nombreuses années, les voyageurs arrivant dans l'archipel ont mené à nez avec un petit avion jaune qui trône fièrement au plafond de l'aérogare de l'aéroport Saint-Pierre Pointe-Blanche. Comment cet avion est-il arrivé là? Qui l'a fabriqué?

Tout commence dans les années 30 dans l'Hexagone. En 1934, le Pou-du-Ciel est exposé au salon de l'aéronautique, au Grand Palais à Paris pour la toute première fois. Il attire l'attention de nombreux visiteurs, notamment parce que c'est le seul aéronef qu'on peut construire soi-même chez soi. Les ailes se replient et il peut rouler comme une voiture sur la route. Révolutionnaire, n'est-ce pas?

Son inventeur c'est Henri Mignet, il a mis un mois pour construire le HM14, version définitive du Pou-du-Ciel. Le petit aéronef est pris d'assaut dans les mois suivants son exposition, beaucoup d'amateurs d'aviation s'en procurent alors.

L'avion d'Henri Mignet est tellement populaire qu'il est chanté par une chanteuse populaire des années 30, qu'on appelle la Houppa. En 1936, le gouvernement interdit les vols de l'engin suite à de nombreux accidents. On demande des tests complémentaires et l'avion est modifié avant de pouvoir reprendre ses vols.

1939, la Seconde Guerre mondiale éclate. Elle arrête le succès du Pou-du-Ciel qui s'est tout de même vendu à une petite centaine d'exemplaires en Grande-Bretagne.

Dans l'archipel? Il aura fallu attendre 1948 pour que le premier et le seul Pou-du-Ciel de Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon soit construit.

Et c'est M. Émile Poirier, ensuite pionnier de la liaison inter-îles, qui s'affaire avec les moyens du bord et achète un avion à Halifax pour en récupérer son moteur et le mettre dans son Pou-du-Ciel. Pour les ailes et le fuselage arrière, le futur pilote d'avion avait plus d'un tour dans son sac:

"J'ai trouvé à Halifax un vieux avion qui avait un moteur qui convenait. Alors j'ai donc acheté cet avion-là pour avoir le moteur. J'ai trouvé un ami qui était menuisier à l'hôpital de Saint-Pierre. Et en bas, ça correspondait à son atelier de l'hôpital. J'ai eu l'autorisation avec le médecin-chef de travailler après ses journées, il travaillait après ses journées avec moi. Il a confectionné les ailes dans la cave de l'hôpital. Le fuselage dans mon arrière-cuisine."

En 1999, Michel Lorca et Jean-Claude Girardin restaurent le Pou-du-Ciel de M. Poirier. Celui qui n'a finalement jamais volé, faute d'autorisation, trouvera sa place dans l'aérogare de Saint-Pierre, peu avant la venue de Jacques Chirac pour l'inauguration d'une nouvelle aérogare.

Si le Pou-du-Ciel d'Émile Poirier n'a pas volé, il est inconcevable aujourd'hui de le voir disparaître de l'aérogare de Saint-Pierre, il fait entièrement partie du patrimoine de l'archipel.
